Peace and Cooperation School Award 2008
“WATER FOR ALL”
Madrid, 25th of January 2008
The Peace an Cooperation School Award 2008 “Water for all” will be launched on 15th of February at 10 am in a press conference at the United Nations Press Room in New York.
Joaquín Antuña, President of Peace and Cooperation, Nancy Rivard, President of Airline Ambassadors International (AAI), José María Caballero, press attaché of the UN Spanish Mission will take the floor as well as Kasey Shelly and Brian Kidwell, Youth Ambassadors for AAI.
The access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation is one of the key world development problems and should be considered as a new human right. It is one of the Millennium Development Goals (goal number 7: to reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water) which were set up by the United Nations in September 2000.
At its 25th anniversary, Peace and Cooperation dedicates the School Award “Water for all” close together with Airline Ambassadors to call for this emerging human right.
.Some facts:1.1 billion people are without access to safe drinking water, 2.4 billion human beings lack adequate sanitation and 4500 children die of inadequate hygienic conditions every day. Besides there are about 2.2 million people per year who die of illnesses associated with the shortage of water, such as malaria, cholera or typhoid fever.
Once again, for another year, since 1993, the two organisations call upon teachers and students all over the world to reflect over one of the most pressing problems of humanity. “Safe water for all” should be the beginning of a “blue revolution” which will contribute to improve the health and living conditions of the most unprivileged inhabitants of this world. At the same time, it should be a key factor in the strategy to combat the effects of climate change.
One more time, the schools of our “Blue Planet” will have the first and last word. To them the new edition of the School Award 2008 “Water for all” is addressed.
