Story From The Field

Mexico

Becky Gahman , Airline Ambassadors' Mexico Mission Coordinator, Reports:

March 2009 :

We had a total of eleven volunteers from all over the US for our mission near Ensenada, Mexico.  This mission provides a variety of needed supplies for two orphanages.

This particular trip concentrated on summer clothing, beans/rice, medical supplies, and hygiene.

One orphanage in particular has been a center of interest for us because of their many needs.  If you would like to know more please visit our Donate To a Project page and look at Casa de Paz.

Even though our main concern was taking care of the orphans, it didn't stop us from enjoying the beauty of Mexico.

We ate lobsters by the ocean, had a spa day at La Fonda and stayed at a beautiful ocean side house in La Mision.

Because of the generosity of many individuals, we were able to deliver many needed supplies.

A special thanks to William Dise and to Crocs.

We had enough clothing to provide each child at each orphanage with:

  • 8-10 pieces of clothing/shoes per child, 700 lbs of beans and 700 lbs of rice, hygiene and newborn Kits from the Latter Day Saints, laundry, dish and washing soap, 200 toothbrushes and 200 tubes of toothpaste, as well as children's cold medicine, and toilet paper.

All of the volunteers brought games and crafts to play with the children while we were there.

We set up stations where they could either color, paint rocks, make bracelets or get their faces painted.

We also brought along the "Pizza Guy" to each orphanage.  He made 35 boxes of pizza per orphanage.  What a treat after a steady diet of beans and rice!

These are ongoing missions.  Each trip concentrates on different needs for the orphanages.
