October 2008:

The October Team "Raises the Roof"

This week we hung dry wall, installed ceilings and mudded a home for a wonderful family who spent all of their spare time working right along side us.  It was a great experience for everyone!

What it's all about...

the families!

Opening doors to

a new life

We also were able to assist a Battered Women’s Shelter, serving 30-60 children per week, which asked for our support in building a playground and beautifying their outdoor living space.

Where childhood

dreams are made

I was able to bring a landscape architect in to completely redesign their outdoor space.

Their board approved the design and we will be working on getting this project started at the beginning of the year.

The future of New Orleans

We will need donations, both monetary and supplies, as well as volunteers to accomplish this task.

The Dream Team

Not only did we work hard, there were a lot of fun activities during the week including a tour of the 9th ward and the levee, a welcome home party, serving dinner at a local community center, and plenty of time to enjoy the French Quarter.

Our next trip will most likely be in February!

August 2008 :

Making it all happen

Our intention on this trip was to work on the 24 hour build to commemorate the 3rd anniversary of when the hurricane hit.

Building a future of smiles!

Unfortunately, upon arrival I received a call telling us not to come as Hurricane Gustav was on the way and they were concerned with evacuating everyone.

Two of us had already arrived, but I was able to cancel the other volunteers.

We decided to stay, spending one day working on a house and the rest of the week assisting residents to prepare for the hurricane.

Precision Craftspersonship!

We moved building supplies and tools into a 2 story warehouse, boarded up homes and made sure residents had an evacuation plan.

See you in October!

They will be back!

We evacuated ourselves on Sat…

Gustav hit on Monday.

The St. Bernard Project is a non-profit organization assisting families who wish to move back into their homes in the St. Bernard Parish.  They are mainly a rebuilding organization that uses volunteer labor and donations to purchase building materials to rebuild homes.  On average, it takes 8-12 weeks and $12,000 worth of building supplies to completely rebuild a house that has been gutted to the studs.
