Dominican Republic
Coordinator:  Daniel Sheth

2010 Trip

06/04/10 to 06/07/10

Trip Full

Airline Ambassadors will be fulfilling its third mission to the Dominican Republic since October 2009.  A group of 35 individuals, mostly part of the Mandell School in New York will be flying to Santo Domingo and spending 2 days at orphanages in La Romana and Santo Domingo.

La Romana is the location of Ninos de Cristo.  This orphanage houses, protects and loves the children who are abandoned, orphaned, abused, or whose parents are imprisoned, drug addicts, mentally ill or unable to care for them.  There are 140 children in residence of which 80% are female and range in age from 1 to 18.  We will be sponsoring lunches for the children on both days, be building a hydroponic garden, organizing song singing events, purchasing groceries, providing in-kind aid such as feminine hygiene products and health aid such as medicine and vitamins and providing monetary aid.  We are also bringing back three children who will stay with families for 2 weeks.  As part of their stay, they will be helping out a the Mandell summer camp for a week.

The orphanage, in order to function, must face many monthly expenses and such expenditure is covered only partially by a private donor, and therefore at times, the staff and children find themselves in difficulty. Jackie’s House, located in Santo Domingo, provides shelter and care for approximately 35 children, many of whom are physically challenged.  The children are often victims of abuse of all forms and often have parents who have been imprisoned.  They are just looking to be loved.

A smaller group will visit Jackie’s House, including the nurse, who will give the children physicals.  A visual representation of Ninos de Cristo can be found at http://flickr.com/gp/jeremypayne/40TWq6 and http://picasaweb.google.com/gvaghasia/Day4DominicanRepublic101009?feat=email#.

Haiti Medical Missions
Coordinator:  joseph@airlineamb.org

Airline Ambassadors is looking for doctors, nurses, physical therapists and pharmacists to participate in ongoing medical missions to Haiti.

We are partnering with Project Medishare and the University of Miami to assist with relief work in Port-au-Prince and Thomonde, Haiti.  Medical professionals will provide relief services at established Medishare/Univ of Miami facilities helping those most in need.

Five months after the earthquake, much of the critical focus has turned to working on trauma and rehabilitation for survivors, as well as education and treatment of simple diseases.    Volunteer physical therapists are providing rehabilitation and therapy services for patients, as well as for those with spinal cord and brain injuries.   We are currently in need of nurses, orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, pharmacists, orthopedic technicians, and general surgeons.   We are asking that volunteers make an eight day commitment, with an option of continuing up to two weeks, in order to ensure continuity and efficiency for patients.
